Amanda (BSc/MSc student): Amanda Fritzen is currently studying for a master at Pharmaceutical Sciences at Copenhagen University (UCPH), specializing in drug discovery of future medicines. She finished her bachelor in summer 2014 with a bachelor thesis in Ola Blixt group at the Department of Chemistry (UCPH) identifying immunodominant linear B-cell epitopes of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever virus. Due to the succes of finding active B-cell epitopes further work will also include development of an immunochromatography strip test. Currently she is working on a new solid-phase phage-display selection strategy for single chain variable fragments (scFv) monoclonal antibodies.

Andras (Postdoc): András Kovács obtained his MSc degree as a teacher of biology and chemistry at Lajos Kossuth University of Arts and Sciences in Debrecen, Hungary. He has been working as a researcher at the University of Debrecen for more than fifteen years in different laboratories at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Institute of Horticulture and Plant Biotechnology and in the Horváth Laboratory of Bioseparation Sciences, where he carried out his doctoral work. He received his PhD in Biomedical Sciences in 2014. Monoclonal antibody proteomics is a relatively new, promising, platform-based technique to discover and identify proteins of biomarker potential. He contributed to the field by taking part in the development of a novel method for protein identification based on mAb proteomics, which may serve as a useful tool in the hands of biomarker searching scientists. He gained experience in the SME sector in BioSystems International Kft. (Ltd.), Debrecen, Hungary, participating in the development of mAb proteomics-based biomarker discovery methods and of cancer diagnostics. On 1 January 2015, he joined Ola Blixt’s group at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark as a postdoctoral research fellow, taking part in the “An antibody array based approach to develop a new generation of PTM-specific affinity reagents” project.


 

Christian (Postdoc): Christian Risinger received his Dipl.Chem. (MSc) and PhD degrees at the University of Konstanz, Germany. During his education an external stay for one year at the Ångström Solar Center and the Biomedical Center at the Uppsala University, Sweden was included. In his PhD work in the group of bioorganic chemistry of Prof. Valentin Wittmann, he focused on synthetic carbohydrate chemistry and established a test system for the evaluation of glycosylation activators with solid phase bound sugar oxazolines. He then joined Glycom A/S in Kgs. Lyngby, Denmark in 2010 as a research scientist for the development and up-scaling of feasible synthetic routes to different complex carbohydrates that can be found in human milk (HMOs, human milk oligosaccharides) and are potential candidates for infant formula and possible pharmaceutical applications in adults. Since March 2015, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the Blixt group at the University of Copenhagen, involved in the development of new methods for the diagnosis of Ebola as part of the EU-project EbolaModRad. One of the main tasks here is the synthesis of glycopeptides representing parts of viral Ebola proteins and further mapping for minimal immunodominant epitopes by using microarray technology. 


 

Ebbe (PhD student): Ebbe Engholm obtained his Master of Science in Biology-Biotechnology at the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen, Denmark in 2013 and where he also obtained his Bachelor in Biology-Biotechnology in 2011. His Master thesis was performed at Novo Nordisk A/S in the section for Diabetes Protein Engineering in Måløv, Denmark. Here, he developed and expressed several novel insulin types in yeast, and evaluated the yield and receptor affinity of these. This was followed by 5 months as a research assistant at the Institute of Chemistry, University of Copenhagen, where he engineered several cyclic peptides by Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis. Infections of various types of influenza-, adeno-, and enteroviruses, is a major problem in the modern world. Many of these virus types have a common feature: They bind the monosaccharide sialic acid as part of their infection strategy. Today, Ebbe is developing new, robust analogs of sialic acid by chemical engineering. This is carried out as one of the first steps in his PhD, which is performed in Ola Blixt group at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. When these analogs successfully have been developed, they are to be used in the development of bead libraries, aiming at finding the optimal combinatorial structure for virus binding and interaction.


       

 

Fredrik (MSc student): Fredrik Leo is currently taking a Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Copenhagen University (UCPH), with a focus on Drug Discovery and Biopharmaceuticals. He started the MSc in the fall of 2014 after he finished his Bachelor in Biomedicine at Lund University (LU) in June 2014. His MSc project will involve generating, modifying and evaluating Single Chain Variable Fragment (ScFv) antibodies against modified peptides. The project will be exercised both at the Department of Chemistry and at different labs in Lund.

 

Lena (Senior Postdoc, Lund University): Lena Danielsson obtained her Ph.D. at the Dept. of Immunotechnology, at Lund University, Sweden, working with in vitro immunization for generation of human monoclonal antibodies and doing pioneer work regarding cloning of antibody gene fragments in the late 1980ies. She started to work with phage display in 1990 after research visits to Greg Winter's lab at MRC, Cambridge, and Richard Lerner's lab at Scripps Clinic in La Jolla. After post-doctoral work at Lund University she joined the biotech company BioInvent AB in Lund, Sweden at an early stage when the company was expanding around an aim to build their large human antibody libraries for in vitro selection. She has then gained vast experience in molecular biology methods to design, construct and optimize such libraries as an Associate Researcher, Group Leader and Senior Scientist at BioInvent AB for almost two decades. As an academic research associate at the Division of Clinical Chemistry & Pharmacology within the Dept. of Laboratory Medicine at the Medical Faculty in Lund since 2013, she has been one of the co-operating scientists forming the PTM Antibody Group and is working in the project ”An antibody array based approach to develop a new generation of PTM-specific affinity reagents” since it started in January, 2015.

 

Maria (MSc student): Maria Fritz Berentzen is studying her master in Medicinal Chemistry at Copenhagen University (UCHP), specializing in research and development of potential new drugs. She finished her bachelor in summer 2014 with a bachelor thesis in Mogens Brøndsted Nielsens group at the Department of Chemistry, UCPH, working with solar energy storage in DHA/VHF photo switch. Her MSc project will involve the synthesis of hydroimidazolones, an Advanced glycation endproduct.

Nicolai S-H (Senior Postdoc): Nicolai Stuhr-Hansen received his MSc (1996) and PhD (1999) degrees at the University of Copenhagen in organic selenium chemistry including external 7-month at the laboratory of Organic Chemistry in Uppsala, Sweden. He then continued as assistant professor investigating sulfur compounds in carbon based nanotechnology succeeded by postdoctoral stays at the Scripps Research Institute, CA and at the Technical University of Eindhoven, Holland. After returning to the University of Copenhagen he then worked for one year as research scientist at Leo Pharma, Ballerup, developing different molecular scaffolds for medicinal chemistry. He joined the Chemical Biology group at University of Copenhagen and for more than a five year period he worked as researcher with Professor K. Strømgaard with main emphasis on synthetic modifications of peptide segments. Currently, he is a postdoctoral researcher in the Blixt group at the University of Copenhagen on constructing glycopeptides for decoration of artificial cell membranes as part of the EU-project GlycSynTis. 

Nicolai M (Postdoc): Nicolai Nareth Maolanan,  completed the biotechnology BSc and MSc programs at University of Copenhagen where protein chemistry and natural product chemistry were central topics. During his PhD, the focus shifted to plant-bacteria (legume-rhizobium) signal transduction facilitated by carbohydrate signaling compounds (nod factors). This work involved fabrication of a glycan microarray tool for studying carbohydrate-protein interactions. External stays abroad during his education includes Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC, USA.Current postdoc research activities takes place at Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in China as part of the IMMUNOCAN consortium (EC, FP7). There, the main objective is to evaluate the prognostic and predictive value of specific mucin glycoforms as biomarkers in breast cancer and other maglinacies.


 

 

Nina (PhD student): Nina Persson obtained her Master of Science in Engineering, Biotechnology at the Faculty of Engineering, Lund University, Sweden in 2012 and her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the University of Kalmar, Sweden.  She had the opportunity to perform her Master Thesis at BioInvent International AB in Lund where she then stayed and worked as a Research Engineer with target identification of tumour specific antibodies. She focused on method development and optimization that resulted in an optimal protocol for identification of plasma membrane antigen using techniques within protein analysis. Glycans and its glycosylated / glycated proteins have a significant role in a variety of human diseases such as increased metastasis in cancer, increased binding of virus or development of autoimmunity as in diabetes. She is interested in development of a large panel of antibodies with differently defined specificity to post-translationally modified proteins and the potential to very rapidly evaluate patterns of change associated with for example malignancy for prognosis and diagnosis. She is today pursuing her interest by taking part in the Marie Curie Gastric GlycoExplorer ITN as a PhD student in Ola Blixt group at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. 

 

Ola (Professor): Ola Blixt received his PhD in organic chemistry (1999) from The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. Between 1999-2007 he was Director of Glycan Microarray Core Facility at the Consortium for Functional Glycomics (CFG), The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), USA. Ola was recruited as Research Associate Professor to the Copenhagen Centre for Glycomics (CCG) at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences funded by an Excellence grant from University of Copenhagen (2007-13). At CCG he further developed the microarray technology towards microarray biomarker applications such as glycopeptide and antibody microarrays. In addition to his expertise in chemical and enzymatic synthesis of carbohydrates, Ola has gained significant experience with personnel recruitment, supervision and daily management of 8-10 research associates, research assistants and research technicians, budget responsibilities, and scientific reporting. He has published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles (h-index=40). Ola has recently established a Chemical Glyco-Biology research lab at the Chemistry Department with several PhD students, postdocs, undergraduate students and guest researchers. Ola is also a honorary Professor at the Imperial College, London, UK, at the Glycoscience laboratory.

Ulrika A (Postdoc): Ulrika Aili finished her Master of Science in Chemical Biology at the Linköping Institute of Technology, Linköping, Sweden, in 2007. She performed her Master thesis in Ulf Ellervik’s group at the Organic Chemistry department at Lund University, Lund, Sweden. During the master thesis she worked in the field of carbohydrate synthesis, where she synthesized carbohydrate substances that can initiate synthesis of glycosaminoglycans in cells and potentially inhibit cancer cell growth. After the Master thesis she started her PhD work in Katrin Mani’s group at the Medical Faculty at Lund University, Sweden. Her project was an interdisciplinary work in the border between organic chemistry and glycobiology. Her PhD thesis focused on synthesizing xyloside-based substances, naphthoxylosides, and to investigate these substances anticancer activity and understanding the role of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans in tumor cell growth. Today she is starting a postdoc project in Ola Blixt’s group at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark in collaboration with Mats Wahlgren’s group at the department of Microbiology, Tumor, and Cell Biology at the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.
