Structure and function of the ’Molecules of Life’
The ’Molecules of Life’, such as proteins, peptides, RNA and DNA carry out specific tasks, such as catalysis, transport and regulation of biochemical reactions, with extraordinary precision. An analysis of the structure, dynamic and function of these biomolecules, as well as their interactions with each other, is necessary for the understanding of the complicated processes, which are a prerequisite for life.
Main research activities
The Biophysical and Bioinorganic Chemistry section works with a broad spectrum of research projects centered round a molecular understanding of biological systems, among these protein structure determination, interactions of metal ions with biomolecules, and modeling of complex biological systems.
The group employs crystallographic investigations together with a range of spectroscopic techniques such as circular dichroism and fluorescence spectroscopy, combined with modern biochemical methods. These experimental investigations are supported by bioinformatic methods and quantum-mechanical calculations.
